What is an article?

By Olavo Cassiano

Among many terms of the Portuguese language, we have the “article” as one that has lots of meanings. Commercial, legal, grammatical, academic and even journalistic, these are the areas in which the word “article” permeates to leave its understanding a little more complex. But let’s go! What is an article?

Grammatically, we understand the article as the word that precedes the noun, being definite or indefinite. In Portuguese, it also indicates gender. In legal documents, each part in which laws, ordinances, and codes are divided, listed ordinarily, are also considered articles. An article can either be a negotiable object in the commercial area, as a scientific text written to demonstrate the results of an academic research. And in journalism? What is an article?

In journalism, article is a text that expresses an opinion, it may even inform, but the core of what should be presented in this type of text is the argument about a point of view. In the article, we find criticism, confrontation of ideas, analysis, and commentary on a particular subject, and even humor and irony.

Among the features of the article, we have: structural and language freedom, which varies according to the author’s intention and target audience; the author must master the subject to express his opinion (in the texts that we find out there, the master is not a rule, but provides more credibility); the text should be signed, indicating the author, and exempting the publication of the opinions expressed in the article; a touch of persuasion may not even be explicit, but when assembling its ideas and presenting them in the form of a text, the author tries to bring its audience together, “to sell” an idea.

Do you want to express your opinion, but you are not a journalist? Do you have a defined position regarding a controversial issue from our society? Do you master any area and enjoy writing texts? If yes to these questions, write an article!
